November 14th Meeting -
|
He told us about the group of out-going, energetic and adventurous entrepreneurs - mostly dentists, who used basic equipment in a make-shift surgery to carry out dental work that transforms lives. "I was absolutely taken aback by the magnitude and severity of the dental problems. I have not seen decay like it here for years, - it was like taking a step back in time". The group have achieved so much in such a short time and in such difficult circumstances and have made an impact on the dental hygiene / care of the children of El Jebah, a remote fishing vilaage in N.E. Morocco. They realise that the project will take generations to see real benefit and change. The key to the problem is education, - starting by trying to help these children and then hopefully the next generation as well.
|
Our President Margaret Horton felt it was such a worthwhile cause that she has proposed that we support the charity by collecting as many toothbrushes as possible for the charity to give to the children of Morocco on their next visit.

'Paper flowers fron the kitchen'
|
The speaker for this meeting was Gaynor Woodward who showed us how we could make dahlias, carnations and roses from everyday paper items found around the kitchen such as serviettes and paper muffin cases. After watching Gaynor deftly form amazing button-hole carnations etc, (which could pass for the real thing), members joined in the fun and had a go at crafting large dahlia flowers from serviettes of different colours. A very enjoyable and inspiring evening.

June Meeting -
'Dispelling the Myths: An Introduction to Bats
A trip to 'Countdown' turns out to be a record-breaker of a show!
Betty Hill organised a trip to a recording of the 'Countdown' T.V. programme on the afternoon of Wednesday 19th June. Dorothy Pulman, Pam Smith and Judy and Richard Thompstone travelled by train and tram to Media City, Salford, and sat in the audience while three programmes were recorded. It turned out to be a historic occasion, as in the third of these the highest cumulative score ever was achieved by a contestant, and he was only 17! The programmes will go out on 13th, 14th and 15th August.
Judy said ''it was all very friendly, with the necessary (if naughty) warm-up man, and informality between sessions and at the end, when one of the workers kindly took a couple of photos of us. Gloria Hunniford was in Dictionary Corner and very at ease with everybody, Rachel Riley smiled and looked at her best at the appropriate times, but yawned and looked tired out when off-camera (they had been recording all morning as well)''. Dorothy had a word with Nick Hewer about his eyes! Some of the photostaken during the visit by Judy are shown below.

Charnes Summer Fete on June 1st
Broughton W.I. provided the refreshments including an array of mouthwatering cakes which were snapped-up by visitors to the fete. The sun shone and Charnes Hall hosted a quintessentially English summer fete, which was well attended and enjoyed by hundreds of people. The following day saw a buffet lunch served in the marquee to help raise funds for the local churches.
Ruth Butter, Lucy Gleave, Betty Hill, Pam Smith, Ros Langford, and Judy Rowlands modelled and talked about items of clothing that had special significance – from wedding outfits, and first party dress to fabulous furs. Pam Smith’s item transported everyone back to their school days with her tray cloth, - dormant for many years and finally finished at Craft Club in 2013. Some were hilarious stories. Who will forget the tale of Judy Rowland’s rope of ivory beads that ended up as a ‘dog’s dinner’ but were re-found and reconstituted as a necklace again, .... complete with teeth marks! Ros’s mother’s mink coat engendered some sadness, but also an invitation to everyone to attend a strawberry tea which will take place at Ros’s house on June 12th to help raise funds for Breast Cancer Care.
This year's very enjoyable dinner was organised by Judy Thompstone and held at the Wheatsheaf inn, Onnely. (Some pictures of the evening are shown below). A raffle was organised by Michelle Justice which raised £36 to go towards the Community Defibrillator fund.
March Meeting: Paula White from BBC Radio Stoke
Paula White from Radio Stoke gave a very entertaining talk about her 20 year career in radio. The competition for a 6-line poem about a favourite radio programme was won by Jean Beasley, and she is pictured below receiving her prize from Paula Yates .
On Thursday 28th February, Broughton W.I. 's Quiz team of Margy Horton; Pam Trafford; Michelle Justice and Ros Langford entered the County competition held at St Leonard's Social Club in Stafford. Although they didn't end up as winners, they had a very enjoyable evening and managed a creditable score. The eventual winners were Aston by Stone W.I.
December 12th Meeting:
'Sizzling Woks and Nifty Noodles' - a cookery demonstration by Aisah Haughton
Aisah Haughton (who originates from Brunei) gave us a cookery demonstration of South East Asian recipes. These recipes use ingredients that most members were unfamiliar with such as Galangal, - a close relation of root ginger, a popular flavouring ingredient that has a similar knobbly appearance and flavour to ginger . (shown opposite) Also Tamarind which comes from long bean pods produced by a tree. These were just two of the ingredients she used to make a Malaysian Chicken Curry. Members were allowed to taste the exotic flavours and sample the delicious end products. Aisah also cooked a quick meal made from vegetables noodles and dried shrimps! We learnt that olive oil was not to be used in this type of cooking, and that curry powder should be mixed with water to prevent it burning when cooking.
|
It was a very interesting and enjoyable evening - with fabulous aromas and tastings.
Many of the ingredients are quite specialist and it is possible to buy these from Aisah direct at her 'Padian Far Eastern Cooking Kitchen' in Norbury. |
July 11th Meeting
Arthur and Audrey Malpass's welcome us to their Fairoak vineyard and lovely home
On a fine summer evening we made our way down to the new vineyard in the Langot Valley (Fairoak), where owner, Arthur Malpass gave us a very interesting talk about how the vineyard came into being, the types of vines planted and their cultivation. Two types of grapes are grown there - a red grape called 'Rondo', and a white grape called 'Solaris'. Last year's wet summer had not produced a good crop, but the hot spell we are having in July is just what the vines need, and they have just come into flower, so a better crop is expected. Many of our members volunteered to return to help harvest the crop, and later were able to taste some of the first white wine produced from the vineyard. It was light and delicious,.... just what was needed on a beautiful evening. We returned to Audrey and Arthur's home, - set in the beautiful gardens they have created with its magnificent views down the Langot Valley. After a brief business meeting, the evening was concluded with a splendid strawberry tea, and everyone agreed that we really do live in one of the most beautiful parts of the U.K.!
A Dog's Dinner and all that!
At our May meeting, our President Margy Horton led members in a debate about the 2013 Resolution ‘The decline of our high street and town centres’. Following lively discussion, members voted unanimously to support the resolution. Pam Smith, who is our delegate at the NFWI AGM, will cast our vote in Cardiff on June 1st.
Then followed a very interesting and varied presentation by our members on the theme of - ‘If Clothes could talk’.

Held on 10th April at Judy Rowland's house.
Our Annual Dinner on 18th April
Planting a tree for the Diamond Jubilee
In bright sunshine on the afternoon of 18th February a group of Broughton W.I. members gathered at Fairoak green to plant a tree to mark the Diamond Jubilee of HRH Queen Elizabeth II .
The project was led by Betty Hill who together with Beryl Roe selected a tree that would provide all year round colour from its leaves, flowers and fruit. A sturdy Malus Rudolph (crab apple) tree was duly planted on Fairoak Green where it is hoped it will be admired by members of the community for many years to come. At the completion of the tree planting, members were invited back to Jacky Donnelly's house nearby for tea and delicious cakes.
|
At our February meeting we celebrated Broughton W.I. being 92 years old. Our speaker for the evening was Mrs G Knight who gave a very interesting presentation on the history and huge variety
of pancakes produced in countries around the world.
|
Fashion Show in aid of the Neonatal Unit of Shrewsbury HospitalRuth Butter. was pleased to announce that the fashion show held on Thursday 25th April at Broughton Parish Room raised a fantastic £700 for the neo-natal Unit at Shrewsbury Hospital.
Our 92nd Birthday celebrated with pancakes
Mrs Knight filled the room with appetising aromas and cooked up a variety of different shaped pancakes for us to sample, from the more traditional flat to the delicious ball-shaped Danish variety – filled with fruit and chocolate.
We had no idea that there was such a variety of size and shapes of pancakes. Some were for breakfast, others for deserts and yet others had an alternative usage - serving as a plate on which other foods were presented. |
You can see some of the pancakes in the slideshow below.
